Sight Word Practice

I am constantly trying to come up with different ideas to help Seth practice his sight words.  Seth and I have started reading books together.  When I come to a sight word he is learning I let him read the word.  He is loving this!

I also found this idea on a blog last week (I forgot to make note of what blog it was and cannot find it now to give them credit...so if that blog is reading this let me know and I will update this post to give you credit).

Basically I took a piece of paper and divided it into squares and wrote the sight words in each square.  I then gave Seth the paper and markers (we used our cuisinaire rods because they were close by :-) ).  I called out each word and Seth would find the word and put a marker over it.  We did this until we covered all the words.

He is really good and reading the sight words.  He still gets a bit mixed up if you tell him the word and ask him to spell it from memory but I know that will come with time!  I think he has gotten the important part down...recognizing them when we sees them.  And what cracks me up is he is pointing them out everywhere we go.  He will point them out on billboards as we are driving down the road and he will point them out at signs and items at the store.  Last Sunday we were at my parents' church and he was pointing them out on the screens as everyone else was singing!

A new song

We have been working on sight words and Seth is doing a good job learning these words.  As we were working on our words this morning I thought of a new song to sing to help Seth to remember these words.

It goes to the tune of Mary Had A Little Lamb and works very well for 3 letter words can probably be adapted for 4, 5 and 6 letter words as well   :-)

A good example is the word the. Here is how the song would go with that word.

The is spelled T-H-E, T-H-E, T-H-E
The is spelled T-H-E, the, the, the, the

Have you made up any songs to help your kids in their learning??  I would love to hear about them :-)

Seth loves to sing so coming up with songs works well for him.

Erudition!

Back probably about a year ago or so I won an educational game on a blog giveaway.  The game is called Erudition!

We pulled it out for the first time last week!  I do believe it is going to be a favorite around our house!  Seth LOVES games so any time he gets a chance to play a game he is excited - even if it is an educational game.

What I love about it is that Aaron and Seth can both play even though they are at different levels.  Aaron is starting to learn his letters (in a very relaxed fashion of course...he is only 3) and Seth has started learning his sight words (which is what the game is designed for).  So when it is Seth's turn he has to be able to read his sight word to advance.  When it is Aaron's turn he uses the letter cards to name the letter to be able to advance.

Seth is learning a set of new sight words each week so each week we add that many more cards to the game pile!

(By the way he is doing super well - he has so far learned the words a, up, go, you, for, the and is)
