Our Turtle Memory Verse

I am loving this memory verse method that I came up with so much that I so look forward to our new set of lessons to get to the new memory verse!   I have always been horrible and scripture memorization!  With this method not only am I teaching my kids at an early age how to memorize scripture but I am also finally memorizing scripture!  And it is really nice when you are having a bad day to think of these scriptures that you have in memory.  I think God personally looks through my brain (I picture him looking in my brain like someone looking in a filing cabinet) and pulling out the verse that is needed for that moment to help me get through it!

And I think this verse may be more for me than it is for Seth - HA!!  This is definitely a verse that I have needed to commit to memory!

And to explain the pictures how I explained them to Seth - in front of the word weary I put a sleeping face and told Seth being weary is like being sleepy and you know when you are sleepy you don't want to do anything...

In front of well doing I put a picture of a stick figure sharing a box with another stick figure and explained to him that well doing is doing good things, things that please God, such as sharing your toys with your brother, and minding your mom and dad, and telling your friends about Jesus.

In front of due season I put a clock and told Seth that due season means at the right time...when God feels is the right time!

In front of the word reap I put a medal and explained that reaping is like getting a reward.  When farmers reap they are getting the yummy fruits and vegetables that are grown from the plants they worked hard to plant...their reward for working hard.  God will reward us for our hard work.

in front of faint not I put a picture of a stick figure climbing a mountain...with a flag at the top of the mountain. I told Seth faint not is to not give up.  We will get that reward if we do not give up.  We should never give up doing what God wants us to do.

The words to remember from the curriculum are "I don't quit.  I persevere."

Seth once again loves it when I put his name in the verse and every time we go over the verses he says "put my name in it".  For this verse I love to tell him "And let SETH not grow tired of doing good things and doing the right things,  for at the right time SETH will earn God's reward for not giving up!"

And like I said, I also need to put my name in that verse and remember that I should not grow tired in my well doing and doing God's will because in due season I will reap if I faint not!  And I need to remember all of the rewards I have already reaped for doing God's will and persevering in the Lord's work as my motivation to keep the faith and keep persevering!

Ahh, the beauty of Christian homeschooling!  The teacher learns as much (and sometimes more) than the child!  LOVE IT!

God bless you all!

Memory Verse

This method that I am using for our memory verse continues to be working for Seth!  It may be hard to tell in this picture but the black words are his sight words that he can read now.  We continue to use the Sun to represent Lord, or Jesus or God.  I used a picture of a hammer and nail to help him grasp the meaning of the word 'stablish'.  For keep I used a picture of a hand with something in the middle, because if you keep something you hold on to it.  And then I used an evil face for the word evil.

Seth also continues to love it when I change the verse to put his name in the verse.  "But the Lord is faithful who shall stablish SETH and keep SETH from evil".  His face just beams when it is stated like that, knowing that God is talking about him and taking care of him!

"God takes good care of me" was the words to remember from our curriculum.  (the memory verses are not part of the curriculum...that is something I have added)

Memory Verse

I thought I would share our memory verse board again this week.  (btw - Seth did an EXCELLENT job memorizing his verse last week!!) This week I decided to write all the sight words that he has learned that are in the verse in black. I then had a few "picture words" (words where I drew a pic in front of them to help with the word) in different colors.  I then told Seth we were going to read the verse together. He loved being able to read the black words and the picture words (once I explained each one).  Oh and I put a little sun over the pronouns referring to Jesus (we use the sun because we learned a couple of weeks ago that Jesus is the light of the World...so the sun is an easy pic to use!) and I put a small stick figure over the pronouns talking about Seth.  That way, to help him grasp the meaning of the verse, I can go back through and replace those pronouns with the words "Jesus" or "Seth" (e.g. - "for without Jesus, Seth can do nothing).

This is just something I thought of myself to try to help my young child not only learn how to memorize scripture, but to be able to understand it as well.  Maybe sharing it with you will give you an idea or two :-).  If you have any ideas on how I can improve this please share! I would love to hear your ideas!

(oh and the phrase at the bottom of the board is our "words to remember" from the MFW curriculum)

Memory Verses

I thought I would share something that we are adding to our MFWK curriculum.  We are adding a memory verse.  The curriculum has the children learn "words to remember" which are good biblical concepts but I personally feel that scripture memorization is very important.  I have to admit that it is something that I wish I was better at and hoping I will become better with it as I help my kids with scripture memorization.

I have made a memory verse board where I put the memory verse.  As I can I like to use little drawing to help Seth "read" the verse as we learn it.  Then at the bottom of the board I will put the "words to remember" from the curriculum.

Here is a picture of our board for our leaf lesson!

(we put the sun pic for the Son...it helps Seth remember that word plus it fits because we learned a couple of weeks ago that Jesus is like the sun because he is the light of the world! :-))
